Today is World Parrot Day.


May 31st is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate these attractive birds. There are many threats to the population and wellbeing of parrots. Habitat loss, climate change, and wildlife trade are some of the main threats.


Many parrot species are in decline. World Parrot Day presents an opportunity to highlight the threats faced by these stunning birds.



Some interesting facts about Parrots.

  • The Kakapo parrot, a rare species found only in New Zealand, is the only flightless parrot.

  • A group of parrots is called pandemonium.

  • These fascinating birds have 4 toes on each foot, two pointing forward and two projecting backward.

  • Macaws eat damp soil to neutralize chemicals in their fruity diet.

  • Hyacinth Macaw is the largest of all parrot species. It has a wingspan of over 4 feet.
